Lisette Stevens was born in Cornwall, England and moved house to Antigua in the Caribbean in 1989 and moved to Dominica in 2007. Dominica is an amazing island; it quite moves the soul and inspires tremendously. “In 2008 a friend of mine Katie went to the UK and bought me some acrylic paints. From there I embarked on an artistic joyride which has subsequently become a passion—when I paint I am in a totally different world, amazing! I was encouraged greatly by fellow artists in Dominica, I admire their constructive input and imagination. I love to paint portraits, animals, Nature and sometimes abstract material.”

Jaco Parrot
acrylic on canvas
“My husband and I owned an Orange-winged Amazon parrot called Ernie who we had from six weeks old until last June when he died aged 18! We were so saddened by his death that I started painting the parrots of Dominica. We have two parrots that are indigenous to Dominica: The Jaco parrot (depicted on the cover) and the (Imperial) Sisserou. The parrots are protected by the Forestry Commission and I believe that by painting the parrots I am making visitors and Dominicans alike aware of how beautiful they are and how they need to be protected.”

Pelicans
acrylic on canvas
“The Pelicans painting hopefully has captured the spirit of these amazing seabirds! The Pelican is surely the bird that has never changed since the prehistoric era! There are many more Pelicans now in Dominica than when we arrived to live here in 2007! I love to watch them glide gracefully across the waves, diving swiftly to capture the fish in their enormous beaks. They are large birds but amazingly graceful!”
