Bananaquit
Acrylic on canvas
"My favourite is the 'Bananaquit', the photo was taken by my good friend Niels Larsen (he is a birdwatcher) and he gave me permission to paint it… My usual way to make a painting starts with moving around with a camera with which I do half of the job; that is the motif, the atmosphere, the light, colours and composition. Thereafter it is studio work. A slow process of building up the picture in layers and layers of water thin paint. I am always trying to heighten the feeling of light and expression in the picture, 'over-emphasise' it, if you will, and still not step over 'the line'. And to me, art is about love. The picture can be just about anything, it doesn't matter, as long as the heart is there."
